LOS ANGELES, CA — Freedom for Immigrants is excited to be featured in the latest season of the Netflix hit show Orange Is The New Black.
“We are incredibly grateful to the actors, writers and producers of Orange Is The New Black for including Freedom for Immigrants and highlighting our work and the work of our volunteers in the final season of the show,” said Christina Fialho, attorney and co-founder/executive director of Freedom for Immigrants. “OITNB has truly revolutionized the way we think about mass incarceration by elevating the stories of those individuals on the inside, not portrayed as mere statistics but as humans. It is our hope that elected officials and the public are able not only to learn from the reality reflected on screen, but most importantly, feel empowered to help change it.”
As announced in this latest Associated Press article, Freedom for Immigrants is one of eight non-profits that will be benefiting from The Poussey Washington Fund, a fund created by the show to continue its legacy and invite people to give back. The fund can be found here http://crowdrise.com/pwf.
Other benefiting non-profits include Immigrant Defenders Law Center, A New Way of Life: Reentry Project, Anti Recidivism Coalition, College Community Fellowship, the National Council for the Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Woman and Girls, unPRISON Project, and Women’s Prison Association.
